A good standard of Food Safety
will protect your customers from the risk of illness, or
even death, and will ensure that your business has a good
reputation. It will avoid the need for enforcement action
being taken against your business which could result in
heavy fines, imprisonment or to closure of the business.
Food Safety legislation applies to restaurants, hotels, care
homes/children's nurseries, schools, open days, school and
church fetes, and anywhere food is prepared.
Enforcement officers now operate a 'Scores on the Doors'
grading system so that their overall assessment of a
business is clearly displayed - the higher the number of
stars, the better the food business has performed in
relation to food safety. Customers will obviously prefer to
eat in establishments which have high ratings which will
increase their confidence and avoid illness - well
wouldn't you?
Some people avoid taking action in regard to Food Safety
because they wrongly fear that it may be very costly or
time-consuming, but this is often not the case.
Examples of successful
prosecutions made include:-
- Supermarket fined
£35,000 + costs for pest offences
- Restaurant fined £6,500
+ costs for lack of cleanliness and lack of soap and
hand towels at sinks.
